AVM treatment in Canada.

We live in Ontario and were wondering if any fellow Canadians who have been treated for peripheral AVMs, could tell us where they received treatment. Has anyone heard of Dr.Martin E Simons? There are lots of postings for American doctors but not Canadian. Our child has an AVM of the hand.

YOu might want to check with Lise Daust. She runs a site in French and is located in Canada. http://www.anomalievasculaire.org/Also,. on the msn group we have a list of malformations and where people are from. http://groups.msn.com/vascularbirthm..._whatsnew.msnw

Good luck

Re: AVM treatment in Canada.

Thank you Corinne. I have e-mailed Lise and am awaiting her reply. I know that many Doctors use embolization and sclerotherapy but definitely do not have the expertise of treating these difficult and unusual peripheral AVMs . They certainly don't see the number that they see at specialized places like Boston and Colorado. We can only keep looking.
Best wishes,
Zim.

Hi Zim,

I know that Toronto has an AVM clinic..but I believe they specialize in brain AVM's.* Though they might have a name for you, or perhaps do treat limb AVM's also.* I agree that Lise will be a good contact for resources.

I also know that several people from Canada have traveled to the states to see the doctors here.* Though I'm sure it's tough with the public insurance.

I, myself have just found out the hard way that I should have traveled for Ben's AVM treatment.* We are just starting the process of a second embolization because the first one failed.* The doctor was excellent, but not an AVM/AVF expert.* Hindsight...*sigh*.

If you end up deciding to seek help in the states, both Boston Children's Vascular Anomalies Clinic and New York's Center for Endovascular Surgery (Dr. Berenstein) are excellent choices for pediatric AVM care.

Feel free to email me with any questions.* My son Ben has multiple AVM's.* We are addressing the one's in his brain right now, but will be seeking treatment for the smaller one's on his limbs in the future.

Hi Zim,

Have you found any place yet?? My 10 year old son is being treated for VMs of his neck at Sick Kids' in Toronto by Dr. Phillip John, an interventional radiologist who is doing sclerotherapy treatments on him. He works out of the Vascular Malformations clinic there!

Take care,

Josť

Try Dr. Josee Dubois in Montreal Ste Justine Hospital. She is very good. She does sclerotherapy using STS foam.

Note that in Canada they will not do sclerotherapy unless your VM is significantly affecting your quality of life.

I realize that the original post was a long time ago. I am also wondering about Dr. Simons. He is located at Toronto Western, I have never seen him but my mum had suggested seeing him as he is a lot closer than Montreal.
