Default Possible Diaper Area Hemangioma

My son is two and a half weeks old. At about one week old he developed a diaper rash. It is one small spot near his anus that is red/blotchy looking that is slightly raised. I change him VERY frequently and have put several types of diaper rash creme/ointment on it. We cloth diaper- but I switched back to disposables because most rash cremes aren't safe for cloth diapers. I found a good creme that is compatible with cloth diapers so I have been using that and keeping him in cloth. I also let him go diapers less to get air as much as possible. The rash is not getting any better. I mentioned the rash at his two week check up today. The peditrician looked it over and says he thinks it could just be diaper rash but there is a possibility that it is a hemangioma. I am somewhat familiar with hemangoimas because I have a friend whose daughter had a facial one. Anyway after reading everything I can find on diaper area hemangoimas the rest of the evening I really do think that is what my sons "rash" is. My son's pedi said to bring him in if the "rash" hasn't improved in a few days or if it starts to grow.

What did your child's hemangioma in the diaper area look like when it first appeared?? Can I post a picture of my son's? I know you can't officially diagnose my son but it would be nice to have some opinions from people who have been there...

I have read that early intervention when it comes to diaper area hemangiomas is important. What should I do now? Parents whose child have/had a diaper rash hemangioma what did you do when your child was first diagnosed?? Do diaper area hemangiomas always become ulcerated?? How common are problems with the spine with diaper area hemangiomas?? I have many many other questions and concerns but I will start there I guess...

Thank you for reading! I'm sorry this post is very scattered- I am trying to type while nursing my baby and entertaining my three year old

Hi and welcome!

If you send a photo to contact@birthmark.org I'll post it for you. I can crop out everything but the rash.

Where are you located? It might be wise to see a specialist if it turns out not to be diaper rash.

Hi Nixxi- my daughter develops an hemangioma in the diaper area as well. It's all started with a rash when she was 2-3 weeks old, but when it didn't get better after putting diaper rash cream we took her to our dr. and she confirmed it's hemangioma.... she said it's doesn't need treatment at that time.
In next 3-4 months its gets bigger and then it starts ulcerated. One time it bleed alot that we took her to emergency but Dr. said there is nothing they can do except to put 40% zinx oxide cream. Then we were quickly reffered to SickKids Hospital, Toronto through our Pead. and they put her on Nadolol. She was in alot of pain esp for one week coz ulcerated area was bad but after putting her on Nadolol we could see a difference withing a week. Once it starts healing it became less painful and after almost 3-4 weeks it completely healed. She is 15 months now, she is still on Nadolol but weaning off now.

That's was our story....feel free to ask que. I know it's kinda scary!
