Default Ulcerated Hemangioma on Bottom

Hi everyone...my daughter is 3 months old and has a large hemangioma on her left buttcheek. It was present at birth and is deep purple in color. It has been ulcerated for about 2 weeks. The wound slowly grew and now seems to be getting deeper, but not bigger. Our peditrician referred us to a local dermatologist. We live in Wyoming and there are only 2 skin docs in town. We saw him on Monday and he was very little help. He looked puzzled and suggested putting a cream called ASAP on it (which he said is safe for adults, and doesn't see why it wouldn't be for kids). I have not put anything on it for a week because the scab seems to prevent it from hurting. We've been keeping it clean with wound wash. Today part of the scab came off and it is hurting her. Do any of you have experience with this? I saw something online about possibly using POLYURETHANE film? Also, should we make the appointment 4 hours away with a specialist in Colorado? What about pulsed dye laser treatment? Thank you to anyone who can help!!

You need to write to our wound care expert, Dr. Serena. His link is on:

http://birthmark.org/experts.php and he will help you. If you have a picture of the affected area, that would be great.

Who's the specialist in Colorado? Dr Yakes?

Default ulceration painful

Thanks for the quick reply! The ulceration got worse today as the scab came off and she's crying in pain. I lost it crying for an hour! We gave her some tylenol to try to help with the pain. Also, I emailed Dr. Serena. We're going to call Monday for an appointment in Denver. I found Dr. Morelli and Dr. Eubanks from this website. I'll have my husband post a pict. I'm having trouble making the file small enough.

If you can't make the file small enough, email it as an attachment to contact@birthmark.org and I'll post it for you.

Thank you! It is amazing how fast it went from bad to worse over the weekend. Today it is much deeper and bigger than this picture. We got a referal to Dr. Joseph Morelli at the Childrens Hospital in Denver and have an appointment on Feb 18. Our peditrician put her on a steroid for a few days and gave us wound care instructions. We gave her motrin this morning and she at least stopped crying. It has been a diffucult few weeks!

Hi I live in Colorado and saw Dr. Morelli when my daughter was a baby. I am guessing he will probably do laser to help heal the ulcer, or at least that is what he did for my daughter when her lip ulcerated and she was in so much pain. I know the 18th is a long time away and if her pain is really bad I am sure you can get him to fit you in right away, he did for us.

Thanks for the tip! I have a call into the nurses at Childrens to see if we can get in sooner. Did they decide to do the laser the day you were seen? Did you need multiple treatments? Did they have to give your baby general anesthesia? How was Dr. Morelli? Thank you so much for the info!!

They did do laser the day we were there to try and help the ulceration heal. My daughter has a different situation than yours. She has a large hemangioma on her face. His plan was not to do laser until right before school age or about 4 yrs. He only did laser to heal the H one time, it ended up healing soon after the laser. He did not put her under anesthesia for the laser, it was very quick and a small area. We ended up finding another Dr. in NYC because her H was severe and we didn't agree with the "wait and see" treatment plan for our daughter. We started treatment in New York when our daughter was 1 yr and now she is almost 3 yrs old.
