Birthmark problems - hormone changes from pregnancy
Hi. I'm new here, and trying to find information concerning treatment for an issue I have been having with the large portwine birthmark on my left upper arm. My birthmark starts at my upper shoulder and continues to elbow level. My birthmark was flat - with no issues other than being embarrassed from the strange looks I would get from wearing short sleeves!
8 years ago I was pregnant with my first and only child. During my pregnancy, my birthmark started getting pimple like bumps that would progressively get bigger. Eventually, the pimple like bumps would start bleeding at some points very heavily.
My doctor sent me to a dermatologist who removed 4 of these bumps by freezing and cauterizing them. I have scarring from these removals.
Drs attributed these bumps from hormonal changes from pregnancy which caused the blood vessels in my birthmark to change. I also had blood vessel issues in my eye during last trimester of my pregnancy.
Well, now I am in early menopause, and these bumps are back (Actually, 3 bumps never went away after my pregnancy. They get bigger and smaller depending on my hormone levels). I have about 5 bumps, and one is in the bleeding stages. Obviously, hormone changes are making this worse again.
I have now been referred to a skin/cancer specialist this time. I voiced my displeasure with the scarring from the previous removals. The birthmark is bad enough, but having scarring on top of that is even worse.
So, has anyone had anything like this? If so, what have you found to be the best treatment to remove the bumps without scarring? Is there any other type of treatment?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
P.S. I have to be very cautious on hormone replacement therapy too. My Mom had breast cancer that tested positive for the estrogen receptor.
