She has been on steroids for 4 weeks and her pediatric derm is trying to ween her off but has a feeling its going to get much larger. He also told me for my daughters hemangioma that they would wait till she is 2yrs to even start laser treatments. I have contacted Dr. Buckmiller at Arkansas Childrens to do the treatments, and she wants to start as soon as insurance approves it. Just thought I'd mention Arkansas Because it is closer. Hope your granddaughter is doing well!!
I just got back from seeing Dr Buckmiller for my son's hemangiomas. He also has one on his nose, as well 6 other places, and she is going to remove it in Jan/Feb. He had his first laser treatment while we were there and I can already tell a difference. I hope your visit is as positive as ours. Dr Buckmiller and her staff were great!

Your grand daughter is beautiful! Her hemangioma on her neck looks sooo painful!! I am glad they are starting to try to help with it!

My daughter Brenna was born with only the cavernous hemangioma on her left thigh. But soon wound up with 2 superficial ones as well. We are happy that it is involuting nicely with no complications! And thankfully she has only ever broken it open once! Scared mom to death, but we made it through!

Here are some pics of her hemangioma's

Where are you located? Perhaps you could go see a vascular birthmark specialist or someone who sees these on a regular basis. There treatments available and the idea of early treatment seems to be more prevalent with doctors who are familiar the newer research. There is hope! Don't worry. Well, I feel silly saying that because when I was in your position I worried too. But I just wanted to let you know that there IS more information out there. First of all, just let us know where you are located and there are suggested doctors on this site that might be able to help. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi Sarah Beth - We had a son in mid-May that had a Hemangioma on his face around the eye. We saw Dr. Fernandez at Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio (I know, it is far from Texas) and they put our son on proponanol, which is a beta blocker that also attacks the Hemangioma. We just got back from 5 days at the hospital as they run a variety of tests to make sure the baby can take the drug. For santity sake, we got 2 other opinions, one at Dayton and Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and they both gave the same treatment plan. We are only on day 4 of the medicine, and we have noticed a big change already. Here is a link with the progression of it.

The MRI does check for the PHACES syndrome. Luckily, our tests of the heart and the brain via the MRI ruled that out.
