questions about my baby girl's hemangioma. Glad to have found this site!
I had a c-section and when I first held her she was about an hour old. AS soon as I took her I noticed this bruise on her hand/wrist. Nurse was like must have been a birth injury. My Ob said no it was not. Family Dr had xrays done. Called down a OT guy to look and he said he was a hemangioma. Then the light blub went off in my Dr and was like yeah a strawberry. It got red within the month or so, really flaming red by 2-3 months and now at 7.5 months it is a darker not so bright looking red. We did see a PED around 3 month old who also said yup leave it as it will go away. I never thought much more about it until my oldest daughter saw a diff ped on Thursday. Baby was there with me. I just mentioned to her about babies with them do she get them to see a DERM. She asked me to show her it and when I did she said you really need to take her to the Derm. She did not seem to want to call it a "strawberry" either. I got a odd vibe from her. I went to my family Dr then on Friday and now are waiting on the time to see our Derm. She is my 3d child and this is new to me. The last PED we I spoke to there kinda put the worry in me. I mean another ped said it was a strawberry but could it be called something else? I diff type of Hemangioma? Google got my brain fried and I can't ever find a pic of one on an arm like my daughter Heidi. From what I read they don't usually be there at birth but a little (week or more) later. Her's looked like a bruise with these veins running through it. I will add some pics. SO happy I found this site online!
I am in Canada and my Family Dr said the norm here is to never do anything unless there is a breathing problem. I am looking forward to seeing the Derm to see what he has to say but that could be months of waiting to get in to him. edit she also has what they call a stork bite on her neck. I am no expert. The pic of her at 2.5 months looks like a hemangioma to me.
As I am finding with going through all of this (dealing with a hemangioma and now another vascular issue with my daughter) is that nothing is textbook. I had a friend whose daughter had a segmental hemangioma on her face and she DID have a faint mark at birth. It just took a few weeks to progress into something more.

I'm not an expert either but I was kinda thinking it looked like a hemangioma too. I think it's always a good idea to get the opinion of a specialist who deals with these every day. There's a lot of misinformation out there and the Ped. don't always have the most current information. My daughter has one on her hand that looks pretty similar to your daughters. Here's some pictures: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...l=1b4cbdd4 36 Hers went away fairly quickly on its own. She is almost 2 1/2 now and we can barely see it. She had no treatment at all. I also have another daughter with one on her lip and she did have treatment for various reasons. As KatieG eluded to every hemangioma is different, so if you have concerns you can try to get to a specialist to at least get another opinion. Hope this helps! Add: hers is pretty warm also. During the winter you would check on her at night-left hand would be cool right one warm as toast. My dr said he figured it was normal since it was blood vessels. We shouldn't see new ones at 7.5 months old would we? I'm thinking any kind would be showing now.

I would have to agree. This looks very much like a segmental hemangioma. My son's appeared sooner than you describe, but in the same way. Did you happen to notice a white halo around the area that eventually develped the vascular lesion? Just a common sign of a hemangioma developing.
Have you noticed the h. start to gray in color? I know you may have some trouble in Canada getting tx., but laser is a common why these are treated in the U.S.

I would use this site to help you more. You can ask Experts on here, can find a doctor that is close to you on this site and talk to other parents who also are dealing with the same thing. My daughter was also a C-section baby and she has one on her nose the doctor just put her on some meds (Propranolol) that will help it go down faster. All the doctors I seen and I saw many have told me it would go away on its own but does grow before it starts to go down. So they want to put her on propranolol so when it grows it wouldn't cut her air way off. Also just to let you know it if you do nothing about it could take up to about 10+ years for it to go away.

I a not an expert either but it does look like a superficial segmental hemangioma. My son has a superficial hemangioma under his eye, it never segmented and it has stayed flat. He is just over 3 months and it has started to lighten. Looking at your pictures your daughters one looks lighter in the more recent snaps. Hopefully you won't need treatment, if so, I have heard topical timolol works well for superficial hemangiomas

Our 2y 4m year old daughter has a very much faded and much smaller single blob version of what looks like the same thing.
After zero treatment it has now got to the point that you hardly notice it. I would go with what the Canadians are telling you and not stress yourself about it too much. These things all follow a similar pattern if they are going to go away. Our one went a darker red than your pictures, to a purple with grey bits and then pinker areas until now it is almost skin like with a few blood vessels in it. However even though our one was very small it was more disturbing than i realised it would be. Especially if you are like me and you tend to look at it fairly closely each day or several times a day. But in two years time you will probably looking at something you hardly notice.
